Highlights To Know On HVOF Coating

By Harold Long

Human beings have been able to come up with different methods aimed at solving certain problems. All of them are very advantageous. Nonetheless, they also have their weaknesses and shortcomings. Maintaining surfaces is a very important thing to do. This is because they will be more effective and their lifespan will be increased. Majority of the methods used have their limitations. For instance, it is important for one to understand the drawbacks that come with HVOF coating.

This is a method that entails mixing oxygen gas with other fuels. These fuels could either be in gas or liquid form. This mixture is then sprayed on the affected surface to cover any wear or corrosion on it. It is a tough mixture which can last for quite a while. On the other hand, it is smooth and dense. Despite the fact that it is one of the most preferred methods of covering surfaces, it has several of its shortcomings.

The mixture is then sprayed on the surface that needs the coating using a nozzle. This is done under very high pressures and temperatures. This means that a lot of care and precaution must be taken by any individual who is carrying out this kind of process. There are several precautions that have been stipulated and need to be followed to the letter to ensure the safety of the technician.

Additionally, the method is done purely by special machines. Mixing gases and fuels is not a thing that one can do manually. The equipment needed is of high value and can cost a lot, whether buying new ones or fabricating them. The mixture is sprayed on the surface using a spray gun. This machine is not cheap either.

This means that chances of corrosion are greatly reduced by this coating. So many technicians prefer to use this process on surfaces since its effects are well visible. Its also important to note that it is not a very complicated process. Almost all the work is done by the use of machines. Nonetheless, the individual must understand how to mix the gas and the fuels in the right quantities.

Once this covering is done on a certain surface, the end results are very exquisite. They include improved performance, added hardness and increased resistance for wear and corrosion of the surface. However, depending on how the covering is done, the time it takes to be replaced or to be redone is different.

This method is not applicable for inner surfaces such as those in a cylinder. This limits the places that it can be used on. It also implies that if one wants to coat such hidden surfaces, they have to look for another option. The machines used, despite being expensive, are also not very available in the market.

Keeping surfaces out of wear and corrosion is not an easy thing. Some of the methods used nowadays are not so effective in doing so. HVOF covering is one of the most preferred methods. It is upon an individual to weigh between its advantages and limitations and make an informed decision. This covering is associated with improved coating quality basically implying it has higher density.
