By Frank Campbell

A barge is defined as a form of vessel that is primarily used for the purposes of carrying cargo. What makes these vessels special is the fact that they are not independent vessels or boats. The fact that they are not independent means that they do not have any means of propelling themselves. As such, they move by being tugged or towed by another naval vessel in the water. This is what Barges for sale are all about.

These vessels can be towed by a wide range of other vessels, including ships and power boats. Barges used to find use in smaller water bodies such as canals, lakes, and rivers. That has however changed in the recent past as they are now used extensively at sea ports.

A normal barge has a flat bottom like a raft. There are two important reasons why a barge is designed with a flat bottom. Firstly, the flat bottom provides the vessel with a larger volume for carrying cargo. Secondly, it is to allow the vessel to transport heavier cargo. Therefore, large volumes of heavy cargos can be shipped from one location to another by these vessels without a problem.

The existence of barges is not a recent occurrence. These vessels were in use long before the Industrial Revolution happened. Before the Industrial Revolution happened in Europe, barges were used to transport cargo across two land masses that were connected to each other by a small body of water. After the occurrence of the Industrial Revolution, the demand of barges started to decline.

Compared to other newer modes of transport, barges became less preferable because they did not possess the necessary speed needed. Examples of newer transport modes that emerged after the Industrial Revolution are trains and steam engines which were more effective and could achieve higher speeds. Therefore, people got fond of them more and more and demand for barges dropped significantly.

Although the use of the vessels has declined, they have never really stopped being used and therefore their production is still ongoing. In point of fact, modern barges are more effective and more developed such that they remain an essential part of the transportation system. Modern vessels can be grouped into many various kinds such as barge for moving liquid goods, car-float barge, dry bulk cargo barge, and barracks barge.

Barracks barge is alternatively referred to as a houseboat. It is used more for residential purposes where people live in them as floating houses in rivers and lakes. Dry bulk cargo is used for ferrying dry cargo. Some of the cargo is cab be used to ferry include sand, food grains, and minerals like coal and steel.

Liquid cargo barge is the exact opposite of dry cargo barge because it is used specifically for ferrying liquid products like fertilizers and petrochemicals. There are several other types of barges besides the ones mentioned in this article. For instance, the power barge is used as a portable power plant. Royal barge is also another variety. This one is very common in countries where monarchy is still used as a system of governance like in the UK.
