Important Information Concerning Concrete Waterproofing Admixture

By Daniel King

Generally, constructing a building or any form of structure is very expensive and time-consuming. If not done in the proper way, it may lead to a person suffering huge losses due to high maintenance costs that will follow. Concrete on itself is a porous material that absorbs water when exposed to water. This can cause deterioration in performance and eventually failure. Therefore concrete waterproofing admixture is a form of care whereby this material is waterproofed from absorbing liquid substances.

If this activity is not carried out the surface will absorb liquids like water, liquid contaminants, and harmful chemicals among others. Apart from deterioration, it can also be harmful to human beings and animals. Therefore this porosity requires certain materials in order to block it and reduce any liquid penetration if possible to a hundred percent.

The major function of these materials is to minimize and block the number and size of the ready capillary pores in the structure. These mixtures get manufactured using non-hygroscopic materials which repel when they come into contact with water. Applying these materials prevents any leakage in the surface.

In this case, the mainly used materials include hydrophobic mixtures or water repellent made of certain oils and chemicals. Petroleum products are used on top of the surface to provide shield since they can minimize porosity.

It can also be done by use of fine solid powders with water inert nature which densifies and restricts water movement in the pores. Use of crystalline admixture also is very important as they contain hydrophilic characteristic. This means that the calcium silicate compound found in them is hydrated and becomes dense blocking the spaces that water will follow when penetrating.

This activity can be done by other materials that the user understands. The amount of dosing varies with the admixture or material used as well as the area applied to. The expected outcome and performance also is considered. The percentage of prevention is also considered when choosing the material and amount of admixture. Areas subjected to constant and large volumes of water will need a thick layer as compared to those in dry conditions.

There are very many advantages associated with this activity. First of all, your structure is guaranteed long life and durability. When this is done, no deterioration of the concrete therefore long service. It also offers costs reduction and saving. Costs associated with periodical and regular repairs or reconstruction are eliminated. It also saves time wasted during cyclical repairs and reconstructions.

Another benefit is that waterproofing makes you to have peace of mind. When waterproofing is done, your mind will rest because the fear of reconstruction or repair has been eliminated. It also eliminates moisture, therefore, no formation of mould. It also reduces harboring of water related bacteria and diseases. It also safeguards your house and reduces risks associated with moist floor, damp wall surfaces and leaking ceilings. It also adds value and worthiness of your property when valued financially.
